Case Study
Viola Stone Studio: a Shopify theme worthy of handcrafted marble
Viola Stone Studio has carved natural stone into sinks, tables, bathtubs and fireplace mantels since 1998, and the storefront needed to carry that weight of heritage and craft.
The brief
A workshop selling one-of-a-kind marble pieces cannot lean on stock photography or thin product cards. Every Viola sink, console and mantel is hand carved from hand-selected stone, so each unit has its own veining. The challenge was a Shopify theme that treats large stone imagery as the hero, signals "est 1998" credibility, and guides homeowners, architects and designers from browsing 200+ signature designs to enquiring about a custom piece.
- Convey handcrafted, made-to-order marble where every sink and mantel has unique veining, not interchangeable catalog SKUs
- Earn trust from a discerning audience of homeowners, architects and interior designers expecting a luxury experience
- Present five distinct categories (sinks, tables, bathtubs, console tables, fireplace mantels) without flattening them into a generic grid
What I built
Gencer built a fully custom Shopify theme for Viola Stone Studio in Liquid, designing the layout around full-bleed stone photography so the marble itself sells the piece. Category collections for sinks, tables, bathtubs, console tables and fireplace mantels each get their own banner-led landing, and product templates make room for material notes, dimensions and enquiry paths to custom commissions, all wrapped in calm, gallery-style typography that reads as luxury rather than discount retail.
- Custom Liquid theme with full-bleed, high-resolution stone imagery and editorial spacing so veining and finish read clearly on desktop and mobile
- Collection architecture for the five marble categories, each with its own banner, intro copy and curated product flow
- Product templates with room for material, dimensions and care notes, plus clear routes from a listing into a bespoke enquiry
- Trust scaffolding woven in: est-1998 heritage, signature-design and review counts, and a design blog for inspiration and SEO
FAQ
Why build a custom Shopify theme instead of using a stock marble or furniture theme?
Off-the-shelf themes optimise for fast checkout of repeatable SKUs. Viola sells handcrafted, individually veined stone where the imagery and craftsmanship story carry the sale, so the theme was built in Liquid around large photography, category storytelling and bespoke enquiry paths.
How does the storefront handle made-to-order and custom marble pieces?
Alongside the signature catalogue, product and collection templates surface material and dimension context and route shoppers toward custom commission enquiries, so architects and designers can move from a reference piece to a bespoke request without leaving the journey.
How are the five marble categories organised on the site?
Sinks, tables, bathtubs, console tables and fireplace mantels each have a dedicated banner-led collection with its own intro copy and curated flow, so each category reads as a considered showroom rather than a single undifferentiated product grid.
