Case Study
Kam Knife: a steel-grade catalog for Turkish bushcraft knives
Kam Bıçak sells handcrafted hunting, Puukko and tactical knives to Turkish bushcrafters and hunters, where buyers shop as much by steel grade as by blade shape.
The brief
Knife buyers at Kam Bıçak do not just want a hunting or camping blade, they want to know whether it is N690, D2, Damascus, 4116 or carbon steel before they add to cart. A standard Shopify theme treats those as buried product attributes, so the real challenge was surfacing steel grade, blade type and sheath pairing as first-class browsing paths across a Turkish-language outdoor catalog.
- Steel grade (N690, D2, Damascus, 4116, X30Cr13, carbon) is a primary buying factor that off-the-shelf themes hide in product specs
- Distinct lines (Puukko, hunting, tactical, folding, axes and machetes, sheaths) needed clear separation without fragmenting the catalog
- Fully Turkish storefront with free nationwide shipping and a 14-day return promise that buyers expect to see up front
What I built
Gencer Karakaya built a custom Shopify theme that treats steel as a navigable dimension. A dedicated Çelik Serisi (steel series) structure and faceted collection filters let shoppers move from N690 to D2 to Damascus the same way they browse hunting versus tactical, while product templates expose blade steel, blade type and matching sheath options prominently. The whole build is Turkish-first, with shipping and return reassurance carried into the buying flow.
- Steel-grade collections and Liquid-driven filters so buyers can browse by N690, D2, Damascus, 4116 and carbon steel, not just by knife type
- Separated collection architecture for Puukko, hunting and camping, tactical, folding knives, axes and machetes, and sheaths, with cross-links to pair a blade with its sheath
- Product templates that foreground steel grade, blade specs and the 2026 collection and best-seller merchandising blocks on the home page
- Turkish-language UI throughout, with free nationwide shipping and the 14-day return window surfaced as trust cues near the add-to-cart
FAQ
Why organize a knife store around steel grade instead of just knife type?
Serious knife buyers choose by edge retention and corrosion resistance, which come down to the steel. Letting shoppers browse N690, D2, Damascus and 4116 directly matches how Kam Bıçak's hunting and bushcraft audience actually decides, instead of hiding the grade inside product specs.
Was the Kam Bıçak storefront built as a fully custom Shopify theme?
Yes. Gencer Karakaya developed a custom Shopify theme in Liquid rather than dropping content into a generic template, so the steel series, the Puukko and tactical lines, sheath pairing and the Turkish-language flow all work as a coherent, purpose-built knife catalog.
How does the store handle the many overlapping knife categories?
The catalog is split into clear collections (Puukko, hunting and camping, tactical, folding, axes and machetes, sheaths) with cross-linking, so a single blade can be found by type, by steel, or by its matching sheath without duplicating products.
